Lon resides on a restored 1983 52-foot DeFever Performance Offshore Cruiser (POC) Trawler in Mexico. He was raised in Chicago and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Having sailed all the Great Lakes, Lon once delivered a Domino’s Pizza corporate yacht from northern Lake Huron to Fort Lauderdale, FL. When local franchises learned of the corporate vessel’s presence, they inundated the boat with pizzas. To this day, Lon remarks, “I ate so much Domino’s, I now prefer almost any other pizza.”
Lon held his 50-ton and 100-ton master’s near-coastal captain’s licenses. After delivering and managing yachts and operating tugboats in South Florida and the Bahamas, Lon “hung up his hat” and returned to land for a while. He found success in media, eventually becoming a business journal publisher in Colorado after working for newspapers in Florida, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Colorado.
Lon acquired a multi-state staffing agency, more than doubled its revenue in a decade, and relocated to Mexico. He’s actively involved with the Vallarta Yacht Club and races on others’ sailboats. Lon is a retired rugby player, referee, and administrator who toured England and played across the United States and the Bahamas. His yacht is named TRY.

Let me guide you through the many ways you can make the most of your time on the water in this extraordinary destination.
Tenacatita is often described as a summer camp for adults, where the days flow effortlessly with as much or as little activity as one desires. This sheltered bay, formally known as Los Angeles Locos, has become a prime destination for cruisers seeking a mellow, community-driven experience.
The approach to Tenacatita is straightforward, with clear navigation cues such as the prominent Center Rock, which should be left to port upon entry. Once inside the expansive bay, boaters will find ample space to accommodate up to 50 vessels, with the best protection tucked in toward the headland in the southwest corner.
One of Tenacatita’s primary draws is its diverse array of water-based activities. During the initial months of the cruising season, the bay is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, offering exceptional snorkeling and diving opportunities at the very west end of the beach.
For those seeking a more leisurely aquatic experience, the Tenacatita River, officially named Boca de Iguanas, provides a captivating “Jungle River Trip” that winds its way through a lush mangrove-lined waterway. This serene excursion offers the chance to spot a variety of wildlife, including vibrant crabs and intriguing birds.
For those with a passion for angling, Tenacatita and its surrounding waters offer exceptional fishing opportunities. The bay is known for its diverse marine life, including a variety of game fish such as dolphinfish and roosterfish, making it a prime destination for sportfishing enthusiasts.
Local fishing charters and panga tours can be easily arranged, providing visitors with the chance to experience the thrill of reeling in their catch of the day. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a newcomer to the sport, Tenacatita’s waters promise an unforgettable fishing adventure.
Tenacatita’s vibrant community extends far beyond its renowned boating scene, offering a rich tapestry of cultural experiences for visitors to enjoy. This coastal paradise is not only a haven for sailors and yachting enthusiasts but also for those looking to immerse themselves in the authentic charm of Mexico’s Pacific coastline. A short journey inland will take you to the nearby fishing village of Ravelcito, a hidden gem that remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Accessible via the scenic Jungle River Trip, this peaceful village invites visitors to step into a slower pace of life, surrounded by the natural beauty of lush mangroves and exotic wildlife.
While Tenacatita itself is a captivating destination for boaters, the surrounding areas add even more to its allure, offering a wealth of additional boating and sightseeing opportunities. Just a short sail away, the nearby Cocinas Islands are a must-visit for those looking to explore the underwater wonders of the region. These islands boast pristine coral reefs and diverse marine life, making them ideal for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.
As you explore the vibrant underwater world, you’ll encounter colorful schools of fish, sea turtles, and other marine creatures that thrive in these protected waters. Above the surface, the islands offer secluded beaches perfect for leisurely exploration, sunbathing, or simply relaxing in the tranquility of this unspoiled paradise.
