LON MATEJCZYK

YACHT CONSULTANT

Lon resides on a restored 1983 52-foot DeFever Performance Offshore Cruiser (POC) Trawler in Mexico. He was raised in Chicago and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Having sailed all the Great Lakes, Lon once delivered a Domino’s Pizza corporate yacht from northern Lake Huron to Fort Lauderdale, FL. When local franchises learned of the corporate vessel’s presence, they inundated the boat with pizzas. To this day, Lon remarks, “I ate so much Domino’s, I now prefer almost any other pizza.”

Lon held his 50-ton and 100-ton master’s near-coastal captain’s licenses. After delivering and managing yachts and operating tugboats in South Florida and the Bahamas, Lon “hung up his hat” and returned to land for a while. He found success in media, eventually becoming a business journal publisher in Colorado after working for newspapers in Florida, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Colorado.

Lon acquired a multi-state staffing agency, more than doubled its revenue in a decade, and relocated to Mexico. He’s actively involved with the Vallarta Yacht Club and races on others’ sailboats. Lon is a retired rugby player, referee, and administrator who toured England and played across the United States and the Bahamas. His yacht is named TRY.

Sailboat Races in Puerto Vallarta

If you love the thrill of sailboat racing, Puerto Vallarta offers some incredible events that attract sailors from all over the world. The Banderas Bay Regatta is one of the most popular races, held annually in March. This regatta is not just about competition—it’s a celebration of sailing culture, where both experienced and novice sailors come together. With Banderas Bay providing a stunning backdrop, you’ll race through some of the most picturesque waters in the world.

For those looking to practice or spectate, the regular races organized by local yacht clubs, such as the Vallarta Yacht Club, offer exciting opportunities to engage in the sport. Whether you’re participating in a race or just watching the graceful sailboats glide by, the races here will ignite your passion for sailing.

Unlocking an Underwater Oasis

Just beneath the surface of our crystal-clear waters lies a world of wonder waiting to be explored. You’re in luck – some of the best scuba and snorkeling spots in Mexico are right at your doorstep. The Marietas Islands, a short boat ride away, offer an underwater paradise teeming with colorful fish, rays, and even the occasional whale shark.
For a truly unique experience, set a course for Los Arcos Marine Park. These striking rock formations are not only beautiful above water but also hide an incredible ecosystem below. Dive in to discover underwater caves, tunnels, and an abundance of marine life. Whether you’re a certified diver or prefer to stay closer to the surface with a snorkel, these spots will leave you in awe of the ocean’s beauty.

Excellent Catch: Sport Fishing for Every Angler

Puerto Vallarta’s waters are known for world-class sport fishing, and the local fishing events here are a testament to that. One of the most exciting annual events is the International Sailfish and Marlin Tournament, held in November. Anglers from around the world come to participate, trying their luck at catching some of the biggest fish in these waters. From marlin to mahi-mahi, the variety of species makes for an exhilarating fishing experience.

If you’re new to sport fishing, there are numerous local charters that cater to beginners and seasoned pros alike. You’ll get the chance to head out into the deep blue Pacific to try your hand at reeling in a big catch while surrounded by breathtaking views.

More Than A Tourist Destination: The Culture of Puerto Vallarta

While the water may be your primary focus, don’t forget to take time to explore the rich local culture of Puerto Vallarta. This vibrant city is full of art, music, and culinary experiences that reflect its unique blend of Mexican tradition and modern flair. The Malecon boardwalk, lined with sculptures, street performers, and art galleries, is a great place to start.

The town itself is known for its welcoming atmosphere and lively festivals, like the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival, which draws international crowds. Be sure to stop by the local markets and try some traditional dishes, from fresh ceviche to hearty birria.

Immerse Yourself in the Underwater Wonders

Ready to cast off for a day of adventure? Puerto Vallarta offers an array of spectacular day cruise options. Set sail for the hidden beach of Playa del Amor at the Marietas Islands. This secluded cove, accessible only by swimming through a short tunnel, feels like your own private paradise.

For wildlife enthusiasts, a cruise to witness the majestic humpback whales is a must-do during the winter months. You’ll be awestruck as these gentle giants breach and play in the bay. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve returned to shore.

Fancy a bit of island life? A day trip to Yelapa is just the ticket. This small fishing village, accessible only by boat, offers a glimpse into a simpler way of life. Relax on the pristine beach, hike to the waterfall, and savor fresh seafood at a beachfront palapa.
